Why is China Banning Millions of Influencers?
China has imposed strict rules requiring influencers to prove their qualifications before giving professional advice, leading to the removal of nearly 10 lakh creators.
Today, becoming a social media influencer is a dream career, with top creators earning lakhs for a single post. Even children are building huge online followings.
But in a major crackdown, the Chinese government has introduced strict new rules that have led to nearly 10 lakh influencers being banned or restricted.
Under the new regulations by the Cyberspace Administration of China, creators who share advice on professional topics such as finance, medicine, law, and education must now prove they have the proper qualifications. Influencers must also disclose AI-generated content, and hidden promotions for health products are banned.
The rules are being enforced across major Chinese platforms like WeChat, Douyin, Weibo, and Bilibili. Platforms must verify creators’ credentials or face fines of up to 100,000 yuan (around ?13 lakh).
Supporters say the move will reduce misinformation and protect users from bad financial and medical advice. Critics argue it could restrict free expression and silence knowledgeable voices without formal degrees.
With many influencers now displaying their qualifications or avoiding sensitive topics, China is reshaping who gets to influence online.
If a similar law were introduced in India, should influencers be required to prove they are qualified before giving advice?
