Khushi was only 15 days old when her mother died of jaundice. Her father was serving a prison sentence at Bilaspur Central Jail in Chhattisgarh, leaving no one else to care for her.
Khushi was brought to the jail to stay with her father and spent the early years of her childhood there. Women inmates often helped take care of her, but she did not have regular schooling or a normal daily routine.
In 2019, when Khushi was six, IAS officer Sanjay Kumar Alang visited the jail for an inspection. He saw Khushi playing with the women inmates and asked about her situation.
Alang asked Khushi what she wanted to do in life. She simply said that she wanted to study in a good school. Her answer motivated him to help her leave the prison and continue her education.
Jain International School in Bilaspur agreed to support Khushi by providing education and accommodation until Class 12. She was admitted to Class 1 and given a place in the school hostel with a caretaker.
For the first time, Khushi was able to live outside a prison, attend a regular school and get an opportunity to build a better future.
